The Crown Valencia by Catherine FriendThe Crown of Valencia by Catherine Friend is the artfully crafted sequel to her book The Spanish Pearl. Catherine Friend is fast becoming one of those authors you could just hand me one of her books without any preamble or reading the synopsis and I would just start reading.

And with that I will leave you with this;

My fellow readers, ever hear of the butterfly effect? The loose definition is the phenomenon whereby a minute localized change in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere. (That is the google definition by the way.)

Join Kate as she wraps up her final adventure in The Crown of Valencia…

The Characters

We join Kate again in this adventure but this time she has her son with her. I found him to be very spot on with his teenage boy-ness. He wasn’t my favorite but played his role in the story well.

The Writing Style

Just like in The Spanish Pearl Catherine Friend follows through with the same type of writing style keeping consistent. Again the pacing was perfect and I love the way the story reads through Kate only.

The Pros

I think the sequel was better than the first which is supremely rare. This is also a bonus because I thought the first was excellent.

Catherine Friend took the story in a direction I never expected, it was exactly what the story needed and therefore found its place in my favorites pile.

brooklyn's favouriteThe Cons

Again I’m not the slickest with names especially if they are ones I am not familiar with like Spanish based names. It never stopped me for long; this is still absolutely a book I would recommend to all my friends.

The Conclusion

If you liked The Spanish Pearl than this is an obvious must. I put my name behind this sequel, I feel like sequels have a bad stigma to them as being lesser than their original but this book delivered with a strong powerful story.

Excerpt from The Crown of Valencia by Catherine Friend

She hopped from the bed, a forced lightness to her voice. “And I shall have Enzo and Fadri to nag me endlessly all day. I shall kiss Matamoros when I miss you. And during the long winters José will sit by my fire and tell me the same stories until I will be forced to cut his throat.”

“You will kiss a horse.”

“Yes.”

“Instead of me.”

She pulled on her shirt. “If I close my eyes, there should be little difference.”

I yelped and threw my pillow at her, but no more was said of what lay ahead of us.
