Change Of Heart by KA MollChange Of Heart by KA Moll is a sweet, romantic story of forgiveness and finding oneself.

KA Moll has carved a niche for herself as the lesbian fiction author who writes stories about redemption and coming back from a dark past. In Change of Heart Courtney is an alcoholic who is trying to fill the void in her life with money, drink and paid for sex. It isn’t working well for her.

Jack on the other hand is a clean living, wholesome woman who does her best to work hard and care for her ageing parents, neighbours and the environment. But Jack lives with an emptiness in her heart that was created by Courtney. When they were in high school Jack was in love with Courtney and thought she felt the same but then one day Courtney just up and left without telling Jack.

That deep pain was buried and only when Courtney returns many years later does Jack realise how much she has longed for her soul mate.

Will Courtney finally tell Jack what sent her running and is there a chance for redemption and a Change of Heart?

The Characters

Apart from the two main women, there are a few characters that I enjoyed. I liked Jacks parents – they had a rapport that I can see in my own parents.

I also really liked Courtney’s uncle. He was fun and I would like to revisit him down the line.

In a delightful side plot we also got a small glimpse into what happened with two side characters from Coming To Terms and, of course, Zane returns briefly at the end of the novel.

The Writing Style

Moll’s writing style has remained true to herself, yet I see it evolving with every book. In this one she took more chances with her prose and I enjoyed the effort with lines like – As fire consumes the forest, work consumed Courtney – making this a fun read.

The Pros

I was glad to see the returning characters from Coming To Terms and Soul Mates – I like to revisit old friends.

The Cons

The story lagged some at the beginning and end but overall I enjoyed the read.

The Conclusion

KA Moll has produced her best novel to date. If you haven’t tried her work yet then this is a good place to start. The character history is a lot less dark than some of her other novels and she experiments with some story telling techniques that I enjoyed. All in all a good read.

Excerpt from Change Of Heart by KA Moll

Jack glanced up as the elevator doors slid open.

“Pardon us,” Francisca said as she stepped into the rectangular carriage along with Mick. They stood next to a younger woman who seemed upset.

Jack froze.

“Jackie Lynn…” The woman choked softly as she stepped off the elevator.

“Excuse me,” Jack said sharply. She averted her eyes and side-stepped to avoid getting to close to her. She pressed ‘1’ and looked upward, waiting. She could feel the woman’s gaze, but didn’t meet it. Finally, the doors hissed closed.

Jack unlocked the Wrangler and held the door open for each of her parents. She walked around the vehicle, climbed into the driver’s seat, and turned her key in the ignition. The engine started with a rumble and she drove off – down the ramps, around the corner, up the street – without a word.

“Jack,” Francisca said softly. “What’s wrong honey?” She touched her daughter’s arm. “ Who was the woman on the elevator?” she asked, and then paused before continuing. “She looked awfully familiar,” Francisca said. By this point she thought she had figured out that the woman was Courtney Holloman, Jack’s high school sweetheart.

Francisca glanced into the backseat to catch her husband’s eye. She could tell that he knew as well.

Mick shook his head ever so slightly.

Francisca settled back, silenced. He was right. Jack would talk when she was ready.
