Boys On The Side may not be a traditional lesbian film, it is more of a chick flick. But one of the main themes in the film is the unrequited love of Jane (Whoopi Goldberg) for Robin (Mary-Louise Parker). Joining this star studded cast is Drew Barrymore as Holly, a morally fluid, happy go lucky woman.
Nightclub singer Jane’s life goes down hill when she breaks up with her girlfriend and her band splits up. With nothing left she answers a personal ad from Robin, a real estate agent who is looking for a travel companion to go across country with.
On their journey from New York City to Los Angeles, the two stop by Pittsburgh to say hi to Robin’s friend Holly. They end up in a rather unforeseen and dire situation and need to help Holly run away in order to escape an abusive relationship.
This is a road trip that turns into a life changing event for the three main characters as unforeseen turns see them coping with a drug dealing boyfriend, a pregnancy and an illness.
Laugh, live and cry with these three memorable characters.
This is a beautifully made film with a great cast and a fantastic soundtrack. It may be a film of the 90s but it is well worth it.
