Tara and I joined forces to do this 10 Best Audiobooks of 2017 list. We thought it fitting since audiobooks are not only becoming more popular in lesbian fiction but they are also becoming better.

Audiobooks are tricky to produce because there are more factors than just a good story. You have to have a good narrator who keeps you interested in a story and your production quality has to be good because something like bad sound quality will pull you right out of the story. These are all factors we took into consideration when putting together this list.

Timeless by Rachel Spangler1 Timeless by Rachel Spangler

Published by Bold Strokes Books and Bold Strokes Books Inc

Narrator: Melody Muzljakovitch

This book is a: sweet across time romance

What It’s About

What would you change about your past if you had the chance? What if you didn’t have a choice?

Stevie Geller doesn’t do conflict. She likes her job as a successful novelist and playwright because it allows her to peacefully ensconce herself in her New York City loft, avoid human interactions, and leave personal drama for the page and stage. When her agent asks her to return to her hometown of Darlington, Illinois, to accept an award, she agrees only because he promises the process will be quick and easy. One panic attack and concussion later, Stevie is forced to confront her past in ways that seem to defy reality. As if befriending a social outcast and confronting high school bullies weren’t enough, she also finds herself falling for a closeted teacher. Along the way, Stevie must decide if some things are worth fighting for. In her rush to escape the past, will she leave behind a better future, or are some conflicts really timeless?

Why I Love It

The story is captivating and Melody Muzljakovitch’s narration works so well with it that I didn’t want to stop listening. This was such a brilliant story and it worked perfectly with audio.

Devils Rock by Gerri Hill2 Devil’s Rock by Gerri Hill

Published by Bella Books and Audible Studios

Narrator: Abby Craden

This book is a: cop romance

What It’s About

Two women vow to bring a killer to justice. Deputy Andrea Sullivan had hoped to leave the horrors of Los Angeles behind her, but the serial murders of college students in peaceful, picturesque Sedona are her nightmare case to solve. The complexities stretch local resources to the limit, and the FBI joins the case with Agent Cameron Ross in the lead.

The crime scenes are covered with the trademark signs of the fiendish Patrick Doe, whose handiwork has been investigated by Dallas detective Tori Hunter and others. But where Hunter failed Cameron intends to win. She will break the case, find justice and go home. No distractions. Unfortunately, Deputy Sullivan is very distracting. And Patrick Doe has other plans.

Why I Love It

It’s a race against time novel, which is always fun. It’s perfectly narrated by Abby Craden and the characters are both exceptionally well done by Hill.

Seasons Meetings by Amy Dunne5 Seasons Meetings by Amy Dunne

Published by Bold Strokes Books and Bold Strokes Books Inc

Narrator: Nicola Victoria Vincent

This book is a: Christmas romance (and thawing the ice queen)

What It’s About

Could the festive road trip from hell actually lead to love?

Catherine Birch is a lonely workaholic who hates Christmas. This year, she is being forced to celebrate with her best friend’s family in the Highlands of Scotland. Having missed her flight, Catherine reluctantly ventures on a road trip with beautiful stranger Holly Daniels.

Although polar opposites, the intense attraction between them is unmistakable. Huddled together, with little chance of rescue, they forge a pact: if they escape, they’ll make this a Christmas to remember. But will it be remembered for the right reasons?

Why I Love It

It’s adorable. And the folks at Bold Strokes Books had a spark of brilliance when they decided to turn this novel into an audiobook. Plus, Nicola Victoria Vincent has made this top 10 list twice, that should tell you something.

Tara’s List

In The Distance There Is Light by Harper Bliss1 In the Distance There is Light by Harper Bliss

Published by Ladylit Publishing and Audible Studios

Narrator: Charlotte North

This book is a: beautiful exploration of life after loss

What It’s About

Sophie’s life is turned upside down when her partner, Ian, dies in a tragic accident. The only one who can understand her devastation is Ian’s stepmother, Dolores. Together, they try to make sense of their loss and rebuild their shattered lives. While their shared grief brings them closer, it also takes their relationship in an unexpected direction. Where does sorrow end and romance begin? Or has Ian’s death blurred the lines too much?

Why I love it

This book left me wrecked. With an excellent story, characters, and writing style, it truly has it all. Also, Charlotte North was the absolute perfect choice to narrate this book. She brought Sophie to life, making it easier to understand her path from grieving widow to being in a relationship with her partner’s stepmother (while still grieving).

And Playing The Role Of Herself by KE Lane2 And Playing The Role Of Herself by KE Lane

Published by Regal Crest Enterprises and Dog Ear Audio

Narrator: Lisa Cordileone

This book is a: celebrity romance with two actresses falling in love

What It’s About

Actress Caidence Harris is living her dreams after landing a leading role among the star-studded, veteran cast of 9th Precinct, a hot new police drama shot on location in glitzy LA. Her sometimes-costar Robyn Ward is magnetic, glamorous, and devastatingly beautiful, the quintessential A-List celebrity on the fast-track to super-stardom. When the two meet on the set of 9th Precinct, Caid is instantly infatuated but settles for friendship, positive that Robyn is both unavailable and uninterested. Soon Caid sees that all is not as it appears, but can she take a chance and risk her heart when the outcome is so uncertain?

Why I love it

And Playing the Role of Herself has an easy style that I found entirely charming and engaging. The romance is compelling and complete, with very tame (but excellent) sex scenes. Lisa Cordileone was the perfect choice for narration, making it easier for me to connect with Caid and to love this story even more.

Unexpected by Jenny Frame3 Unexpected by Jenny Frame

Published by Bold Strokes Books and Bold Strokes Books Inc

Narrator: Nicola Victoria Vincent

This book is a: delicious butch/femme romance

What It’s About

Self-made business owner Dale McGuire has always enjoyed two things in life: women and fast cars. Now in her mid thirties, she’s restless and can’t work out why. Then one day a ten-year-old boy turns up, claiming to be her son, and her simple ordered world turns upside down.

Rebecca Harper bears the emotional scars of her father’s crimes, and now she has two rules: never let anyone get too close, and never admit weakness. Thanks to an anonymous egg donor, infertility didn’t stop her from having her son Jake. Now pregnant for a second time, she’s horrified when Jake brings home the woman he believes is his other mother.

When distrust turns to understanding and passion, can Dale and Rebecca, two women bound by fate, make a family neither expected?

Why I love it

Jenny Frame’s books are all so engaging and easy to read, with a sensibility that is particular to her, and this one is no exception. Dale is dreamy, Rebecca is fierce and awesome, and their romance is so satisfying. Also, I think Nicola Victoria Vincent’s voice with Frame’s words is one of my favourite current pairings in the lesfic audio world!

Sheena’s Note: This would have made my list if Tara hadn’t added it. It’s so cute.

Goldenrod by Ann McMan audiobook4 Goldenrod by Ann McMan

Published by Bywater Books and Audible Studios

Narrator: Christine Williams

This book is a: worthy revisit to the world of Jericho

What It’s About

Everyone in Jericho seems to be seeking equilibrium these days. Maddie and Syd are still together, trying to figure out what their home is now that their foster son, Henry, is living with his father again. James and Henry are establishing their own life in Jericho, and while Henry is making friends with Dorothy and Buddy, James is feeling unsettled now that he’s out of the military. Maddie’s mother, Celine, is living fulltime in Jericho too, remodeling an old house and denying that her life is undergoing a little remodeling of its own thanks to her relationship with a younger man. Roma Jean Freemantle is over her attraction to Maddie and is experiencing the exciting rush of attraction with another woman (who happens to find her clumsiness adorable). Everything would be great if it weren’t for the bigoted mayor who starts ramming through a bunch of ordinances clearly aimed at one thing—hurting immigrants and gay and lesbian business owners in Jericho.

Why I love it

Goldenrod tackles some tough stuff and thankfully does so without ever becoming overwhelming or relentless. As always, Christine Williams did a perfect job with the narration, making it feel like I was right there in Jericho with Maddie, Syd, and the rest of the gang.

Taste by Kris Bryant5 Taste by Kris Bryant

Published by Bold Strokes Books and Bold Strokes Books Inc

Narrator: Brittni Pope

This book is a: culinary school teacher/student romance

What It’s About

Determined to fulfill her dream of becoming a chef and winning a coveted scholarship to study cooking in Italy, Ki Blake rushes in late to the first class of her final semester at Kirkwood Culinary Academy and is stopped in her tracks by Taryn Ellis, the school’s newest instructor. A beautiful and accomplished chef, Taryn has walked away from her promising career in the city’s top restaurant to devote her life to her five-year-old daughter.

Ki and Taryn try their best to resist the urge to give in to the undeniable chemistry between them. And when at last they begin a passionate affair that must be kept a secret, they are each convinced it’s only a short-term fling.

It’s up to both Ki and Taryn to decide whether they have found something genuine or whether the taste of romance they’ve had is truly enough.

Why I love it

Taste brings together a lot of things I love: food, an age gap romance, and a teacher/student relationship, all wrapped up in a gentle, easy-to-read story. Brittni Pope also does a fabulous job narrating this book, helping me really get into Ki’s mind.
